This is prompted by the "importance of Morocco's territorial integrity in mainta ining peace and stability" in the Arab Maghreb sub-region, the parties said in a statement in Nouakchott on Saturday. The parties further underscored the "strategic dimension" of the Maghreb sub-reg ion and urged the Mauritanian government to withdraw its recognition of the Sahr a wi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, has been claimed by Morocco while the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, the main liberation movement, proclaimed the terr i tory's independence in 1976 under the name of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) which was recognized in 1983 by the Organization of the African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU).
