This is prompted by the "importance of Morocco's territorial integrity in mainta ining peace and stability" in the Arab Maghreb sub-region, the parties said in a statement in Nouakchott on Saturday. The parties further underscored the "strategic dimension" of the Maghreb sub-reg ion and urged the Mauritanian government to withdraw its recognition of the Sahr a wi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, has been claimed by Morocco while the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, the main liberation movement, proclaimed the terr i tory's independence in 1976 under the name of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) which was recognized in 1983 by the Organization of the African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU). Three Mauritanian political parties - the People 's Rally Party (PRP), the Mauritanian Renewal Party (PMR) and the Rally for Just i ce and Equality (RJE) - have expressed support for the Moroccan initiative for the autonomy of the Western Sahara.
